About
"Are you...?" was inspired by the sight of couples sitting on the many benches around Mount Rokko, which got us thinking about the distance between people and the possibility of closeness. These are some of the questions that fed us as we created the piece:
-
how close can two people ever be?
-
can we ever overcome our differences?
-
can language bring us closer together?
-
can two people be together without sacrificing their individuality?
“Are you…?” is a Corporeal Mime performance incorporating Japanese and English text, music and video. It takes the form of a collage that leaps from genre to genre (nouvelle vague, silent movie, minimalism, classicalism…) to convey the perils of miscommunication and the hope for something better.
