Full-time course
Expressing Drama through the Body
The full-time course is a thorough immersion in the art of Corporeal Mime. With classes every weekday, three terms a year, over a period of three years, it is ideal for anyone looking to develop as a professional artist. The classes are taught by Kentaro Suyama and Tania Coke, directors of tarinainanika. Our commitment is to help students reach the highest level of expertise in Corporeal Mime and fulfil their personal potential as an artist. (

CURRICULUM
Each week is made up of 20 hours of lessons. The curriculum is divided into the following areas:
● Technique
In these classes you will develop the technical skills to express drama through your body. Areas of study include: articulation of the body, stylisation of action, dramatic use of space, the illusion of weight and resistance, walks and displacements, figures of style, the categories of acting, rhythm and texture of movement.
● Improvisation
Improvisation is the study of 'how to be' and 'how to act' on stage. For each improvisation you will find and develop your own ideas on a given theme, using imagination, expression and action.
● Composition
Corporeal Mime has its own unique processes for creating theatre. The starting point and focus is the actor's body. During composition class you will learn how to make use of these processes to transform your ideas into refined theatrical expressions. Working solo, in duet and ensemble you will study themes such as:
・ how to reconstruct reality on stage
・ the phrasing of theatrical movement
・ the relationship between time and space
・ how to compose and direct physical theatre
・ the relationship between text and movement
・ use of music, props, costumes
● Repertoire
The repertoire of Corporeal Mime contains pieces that date from the 1930s to the present day. By studying these pieces you will experience the diversity of styles and themes that can be expressed through Corporeal Mime. The repertoire is also a rich source of inspiration for your own creative journey.
● End-of-term and end-of-year performances
At various points in the school year you will have opportunities to present your work in front of an audience, here at the Flying Carpet Factory.
● Lectures
The curriculum includes lectures and demonstrations which will help to deepen your understanding of the historical and philosophical context of Corporeal Mime, and broaden your awareness as an artist.
● Event planning and management
Students will also have a chance to participate in the planning and management of events held at the Flying Carpet Factory. Through this you will gain practical know-how and experience that will support your development as an independent artist.
