Corporeal Mime Creation & Education

tarinainanika is a physical theatre company specialising in Corporeal Mime. Directors Kentaro Suyama and Tania Coke studied in London with Steven Wasson and Corinne Soum (last assistants of the founder of Corporeal Mime, Etienne Decroux) and were long-term members of their company, Theatre de l'Ange Fou. As third-generation artists we are committed to continuing and developing the art of Corporeal Mime through creation and education.

CREATION

"Theatre will only be worthy of its name when those who act refuse to obey those who write..."
Etienne Decroux

The aim of our creative activities is to draw out the creative potential of each actor and inspire the search for personal ideals. We create from scratch, drawing on the unique creative processes and boundless technique of Corporeal Mime. By delving ever-deeper into the possibilities of stylised acting we hope to offer an alternative to theatre that is based on text, story or technology. We regularly collaborate with artists from other genres and create site-specific works in the search for new avenues in the evolution of Corporeal Mime.

EDUCATION

"Genius fades. People die. It is art that is eternal."
Etienne Decroux

In addition to creating and performing our own work, we are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of Corporeal Mime artists who will continue the tradition after us. In 2020 we opened a school in Osaka offering full-time training in Corporeal Mime as well as open classes, workshops and educational events. We also give workshops, talks and demonstrations for theatre companies, schools, universities, businesses and anyone interested in exploring the creative and expressive power of the body. Through this we hope to raise standards of creativity and physical expression in society at large.
