Corporeal Mime
School of Performing Arts
Full-time Course Diploma Performance
This event is the culmination of three years of full-time training by Yukiko Masui and Ryuta Kawai, who joined the Corporeal Mime School of Performing Arts when it opened in 2020. The final assignment for their diploma studies was to create and perform a solo piece from scratch. It's a slow process of self-enquiry, in which the hardest part is knowing what questions to ask. We warmly invite you to come and see the results.

PUBLIC EYE
Devised, Directed and Performed by
RYUTA KAWAI
When I woke up this morning, I washed my face in the washbasin and looked at my reflection in the mirror. There was something odd about it. The face was unfamiliar. It stared at me and said “who are you? where are you from?”. It kept on asking me questions I couldn’t answer. I was only playing around with the questions because I was tired. But somehow they started to take on a life of their own.
At the Bottom of the Tank
Devised, Directed and Performed by
YUKIKO MASUI
A memory of the deceased is also a memory of myself in relation to that person.
The past that I would prefer to forget is engrained in me. It should have sunk to the bottom but it rises up from the depths to confront me. I have to figure it out. I have to confront the memories I would prefer to forget.
Profile
Yukiko Masui
Born in Kobe City, Hyogo Prefecture. After graduating from Osaka University of Arts, she began working in the local Kansai theatre scene and then participated in Company Derashinera's White Theatre Series in Tokyo. In 2020 she enrolled in the Corporeal Mime School of Performing Arts in order to learn more about the physical dimension of theatre and to create her own work. For Yukiko every day is an opportunity to discover more about herself - body and mind - and about the pieces she wants to create.
Profile
Ryuta Kawai
