End of Term Performance
14th December 2024
On Saturday 14th December we are running a special end-of-year programme for anyone curious to learn more about the beautiful and empowering art of Corporeal Mime. Corporeal Mime is an approach to theatre based on the expressive power of the body. Originating in France, it is still little known in Japan. Our end-of-year programme is a chance to experience the basics of corporeal mime through a 90-minute trial lesson, and to see Corporeal Mime in action in a short performance by participants of the full time course.. Both the lesson and the performance are free of charge!
★ The lesson will include a short talk about Corporeal Mime and the School.
Free Trial Lesson
In this 90 minute class you will experience the basics of Corporeal Mime and acquire practical tools to help you express drama through your body. By studying the distinctive technique of Corporeal Mime you will gain physical awareness, expand your expressive vocabulary and learn to make more creative choices. The class will be taught by Kentaro Suyama and Tania Coke, directors of tarinainanika theatre company. Anyone interested in physical expression is welcome. No prior experience necessary.
End of Term
Performance
After the class there will be a short performance by participants of the full time course. The performance will be a collage of the students' original compositions woven together with 'figures' by Etienne Decroux, the originator of Corporeal Mime and father of modern mime.
Inspired by Gordon Craig's idea of the "Uber-Marionette" Decroux dedicated his life to building the actor's art of Corporeal Mime. His aim was to enable human beings to achieve a level of versatility and virtuosity that Gordon Craig believed could only be achieved by marionettes.
